Course Description
EXCEL 10 and/or EXCEL 11 experiences are designed to expose students to a vast array of career options. They participate in work based learning opportunities including field trips, job shadows, and career explorations. Students will also apply and are hired for a position in the simulated EXCEL Corporation. The career planning process continues, as students look deeper in knowing themselves, researching and evaluating options, setting goals and making plans for life after high school. Learning how to manage money is also an important part the EXCEL sessions. Based on possible career selections, students will be asked to create a simulated budget including housing costs, utilities, transportation, food, and clothing. Once students successfully complete a EXCEL 10, many new EXCEL opportunities are available, such as attending sessions at Northwest Alaska Career & Technical Center (NACTEC) and Kuspuk School District’s popular Camp Kick Ash. Also students will complete activities on AKCIS that will full fill many components of the Alaska PLCP, earn 1 elective high school credit, and 1 UAF college credit. EXCEL 11 is geared for students who are in their last year of high school. It is self directed and designed for the students to participate in extended career explorations in their particular field of interest. These experiences could be completed anywhere from a 2 hour block to a 2-3 day internship. The career planning process includes next steps, knowing themselves, researching and evaluating options, revising goals and making action plans. Students will also have the opportunity to obtain their First Aid/CPR certification. Another major focus during EXCEL 11 is learning to budget money. Students will set up a monthly budget, learn how to rent an apartment and purchase a vehicle. A tour of a bank will be provided and students will learn valuable information on how to establish credit, set up savings and checking accounts, and apply for student scholarships, etc. Many students choose to attend more than one EXCEL 11 session. Also students will complete activities on AKCIS that will full fill many components of the Alaska PLCP, earn 1 elective high school credit, and 1 UAF college credit.
