Course Description
Food Science focuses on the physical, microbiological, and chemical makeup of food. The course provides students with hands-on experiences related to food chemical components, chemical reactions and interactions, pathogenic organisms, processes such as fermentation and spoilage, detection and quantification of pathogenic organisms, and how they survive in food and processing environments. The class introduces students to different types of nutrients and foods. In Food Science, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Food Science experience will support students seeking careers in food production or preservation, such as our local fish processing industry.
